Garden Gnome Carnage is a hectic, Christmas-themed Time-Waster

gardengnomecarnage

Ahh, the spirit of Christmas! Not that I would know anything about that, actually... But if Christmas is your thing, you might enjoy Garden Gnome Carnage. Or actually, even if it's not your thing, but you just enjoy the concept of brutally flinging tiny, merry garden gnomes all over the screen to the sound of hectic 8-bit music, this may be for you.

You're dangling off of a building's chimney. The gnomes are storming the building, trying to get up to the chimney and spread the good cheer of Christmas. Your goal is to keep them from getting there. You do this by moving the building from side to side (don't ask me why the building moves, but it's got wheels!).

As you move the building, you dangle to and fro, hitting any gnomes that are unfortunate enough to be in your trajectory. If you hit them extra hard, you get points. The whole thing rapidly devolves into a hectic gnome-throwing fest, and when you add the air strikes that you can call by hitting Space, well, ... you get the picture!

Hands-on video review of Office for Windows Phone 7

If you weren't aware, it's impossible to take screenshots with Windows Phone 7. Perhaps once it's rooted we'll be able to -- but until then, screenshotting apps for reviews is laborious -- you have to take a photo of the screen -- and the quality is inevitably low.

So, looking for an alternative, I decided to do a video review of Office for Windows Phone 7. It's about 10 minutes long, and the video quality is excellent. You should be able to clearly see the text on the screen, and the audio commentary should be informative (and perhaps even funny).

In the video I step through the three key features of Office for WP7: OneNote (and its integration with SkyDrive); Word and Excel (viewing and editing); and SharePoint integration (though I sadly couldn't get it to work). OneNote definitely stands out as one of WP7's killer features, especially when combined with SkyDrive synchronization. Word and Excel, which lack the ability to sync, seem rather useless in comparison -- but still, being able to view Word and Excel documents on the move is surely a good thing.

The video review is after the break.

My favorite award show of the year

So, I’m likely to date myself quite a bit here, but I grew up watching MTV and the video music awards which took place last night. Aside from being more relevant to pop music than some others like the Grammy’s are today….it seems that the VMA’s always give us something to talk about. This year, [...]

Tawse ? Winery of the Year

Ever since the first wines hit the bottle barely ten years ago, I have drunk and enjoyed the fine adult beverages produced by Tawse Winery in Niagara. Tawse is in the heartland of the Niagara Escarpment. As one ascends the incline on Cherry Avenue in Vineland towards the top of the escarpment, seeing the winery [...]

How to Spend it?

When I was approached by the the Financial Times online arm to write for the digital supplement to their monthly luxury magazine, How to Spend it, I was ambivalent.

You see, it was no less than our vinous US forefather, Thomas Jefferson, who said, “In matters of principle, stand like a rock; in matters of taste, swim with the current.”

In terms of my principle, I’m decidedly against the section of the wine world that treats wine with a certain luxury preciousness. In terms of my taste, I like good wine, most of which is categorized in the “luxury” category of pricing.

You can see how this is a conundrum, right?

As I vacillated, my wife, a smart woman, said to me, “How to spend it?  Are they talking about money or time?”  Ah, bingo.  She also said,THE Financial Times?  Of course you write for them. Don’t be an idiot,” but that’s beside the point.

As I thought about what she said, she’s right: There are two types of currency in our world—time AND money and I don’t have to necessarily focus on the aspect of the wine world that has to do with a lot of money, I could simply talk about how to spend time related to wine—what’s new and interesting, what to read, what to watch, and what to pay attention to for those who have the patience for wine and invest their time accordingly.

So, my first piece was this week.  I made it through with just some light editing—my editor cleaned up a couple of my writing quirks—colloquialisms that don’t play internationally, my penchant for writing really verbose sentences that act as paragraphs, and my proclivity for coherent, but nonetheless tangential non sequiturs.  She even ran with my headline suggestion!

I pretty much have free rein to write as often as I would like.  For now it’ll probably be once a month, though I may ramp that up to twice monthly.  And, of course, I will now name drop Jancis Robinson as, “My colleague Jancis.”  I kid, I kid ...

Doubtful this piece will be anything insightful or revelatory for most of you, the .5% of the wine world who are really interested in “shop talk” about the more business-oriented aspects of the biz, mostly here in the US.  However, it should be of interest to an international audience who is less caught up in the day-to-day of the online wine scene.

if you’re so inclined, you can check out my piece called, “In Pursuit of the Vine from the Armchair” at FT’s site, http://www.howtospendit.com
