  1. It's the US Government vs Facebook.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and a broad coalition of 48 states and districts have filed parallel lawsuits against the social media giant. They accuse it of anticompetitive behaviour - of pursuing a “buy or bury” strategy to squash small startups and choke competition.

The antitrust lawsuits seek a permanent injunction to break up Facebook’s business empire - specifically, to force it to unwind its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp.

Facebook called the lawsuits “revisionist history”, adding that antitrust laws aren’t meant to punish “successful companies”.

Why are US states suing Facebook? Will Instagram and WhatsApp be broken away from the company? How did Facebook get into this mess?
