DropSpace adds real Dropbox sync to Android

Dropbox offers a lovely client for Android, but it's lacking true "sync" functionality. You can merely browse your Dropbox, pull files into the device, and manually upload specific files.

DropSpace is a little Android app that makes Dropbox on Android work like Dropbox - that is, you get real folder synchronization in the background.

When you run the app you're prompted for your Dropbox credentials. After logging in to Dropbox, you get to select which device folders you'd like to sync to the cloud. It's a straightforward mapping process: You select a folder on the device, and then specify where in Dropbox it should go.

The interface is rather clunky, at least for now. The biggest annoyance is that you can't edit your "sync list": if you add a folder and then wish to remove it, you must delete the entire list of folders and start over.

In terms of functionality, it works quite well. I tested it with the camera folder, and it was nice to be able to take my photos using the lean default Camera app and have them sync up to the cloud instantly.

Xi3 goes the crowdfunding route for future X3A, X7A modular PCs (video)

Xi3 has been one of the more inventive PC builders in the field, designing its Modular Computers in the belief that small, more upgradable desktops are the way of the future. The company is planning two new systems to further that dream, the X3A and X7A, but it wants our help: it's running a Kickstarter funding drive until October 28th to assist the development and garner some early adopters. Put down $503 or $603 and you'll get the entry-level X3A, a dual-core 1.65GHz (likely AMD E-450-based) PC with 4GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD and either Linux or Windows installed; splurge with $1,103 or more and you'll get the more performance-driven X7A, which jumps to a quad-core chip with a 3.2GHz peak speed, a Windows-loaded 64GB SSD and faster graphics. Assuming Xi3 makes its target, we should see the X3A and X7A arrive in January and February respectively, with Kickstarter supporters beating the larger herd by a week. Even existing owners are accounted for through a Primary I/O Board upgrade, due before the end of this year, that carries more Ethernet and USB 3.0 ports. Crowdfunding is an unusual approach to buying that next PC, without the certainties of shopping at an online store -- but we're also dealing with an unusual PC from the get-go.

Google Latitude check-in deals now available across the US

Recently, Google has been busy beefing up Latitude to make it more competitive with other location apps -- and more fun to use. Location history was added recently, iOS users can post check-ins via Latitude, and now Google has begun rolling out location-based deals which are tied to the service.

If you're in the U.S., you can now score local savings at participating merchants by checking in with Latitude. Google will also be offering "status deals," which users can unlock by visiting a particular merchant on a regular basis. Mashable notes three status levels: regular, VIP, and guru -- though partners can apparently customize those titles if they choose.

Right now deals are available from merchants like American Eagle Outfitters, Arby's, Finish Line, Macy's, Quiznos, and RadioShack.

A jailbreak of iOS 4.3.1 is now possible with both PwnageTool on Mac, and Sn0wbreeze on Windows. RedmondPie -- who else? -- has some handy guides that you can follow for all iOS 4.3.1 devices on Windows, for iPhone 4 on OS X, iPad 1 on OS X, iPhone 3GS on OS X, and iPod touch 4G and 3G on OS X.

All iOS 4.3.1 jailbreaks are still tethered, meaning you'll have to jailbreak your device after every reboot. An untethered jailbreak is slated for release sometime in the next week -- but 4.3 was meant to have an untether, too, and that never emerged.

Maybe Apple's updated security mechanisms will finally keep hackers at bay!

Nikon Coolpix S800c starting to ship in U.S and Australia

Despite being somewhat overshadowed by the Jelly Bean toting Samsung Galaxy Camera, we shouldn't forget about the Nikon Coolpix S800c. Having been announced prior to IFA 2012 where we first saw the Galaxy Camera, all fell quiet ahead of an expected late September release. It's now late September, and we're starting to see some of the first retailers with stocks of the camera.

One of the earliest U.S. retailers to announce pre-orders for the S800c, B+H Photo Video, let us know today that our camera has shipped.

Down under, in Australia, the S800c is showing up in stock at CameraCity for AU$399 plus delivery and is available in black or white. According to the guys at Ausdroid, no local retailers are showing the device in stock, but some are showing up in retailers systems to place orders for.

Considering the expected price for the Galaxy Camera, the Nikon could be a bit of a steal. The Galaxy Camera offers more on the Android front, that goes without saying, with the Nikon languishing on Gingerbread. But, we should remember this is supposed to be a camera first and foremost, and it's really this end of the device that matters the most. Here's open webOS OE running on a Galaxy Nexus

The folks at WebOS Ports have released a video of open webOS booting and running on a Samsung Galaxy Nexus today, hours after HP announced the code release. As we understand it, the device boots up and Wifi is working, but the core function of things like cellular radios, sensors, and the like aren't yet active. Nor is any soft of graphics acceleration, as you can see from the video.

I'll say this right now -- don't discount this because it looks laggy and, well, sucky. The folks behind the project have had access to the code in beta form for a while, but it tales a lot of time (and the right device) to make something like this happen. When it's ready for public consumption, even at an alpha level, I'm sure the people at WebOS Ports will be there to share and help out. In the meantime, be sure to hit up webOS Nation to keep tabs on how this one plays out.

Sony starts delivering Ice Cream Sandwich update to Xperia go, Xperia U and Xperia sola

Well, it looks like Sony's in-house software developers have decided this is the perfect week to deliver delicious treats to a large portion of the company's mobile lineup. Not long after outing updates for the Tablet S and Xperia Ion (in the US), the electronics giant is now bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to handsets such as the Xperia go, Xperia U and Xperia sola. The refresh itself brings a slew of novel traits to the trio of Xperia slabs, including a "new way to experience" music, photos and video, improvements to the lockscreen, the ability to resize widgets and the addition of a "multitasking" button. While the standout features remain the same across the board, the Xperia sola does get an added bonus in the form of a so-called, self-explanatory glove mode -- which is made possible by the device's "floating touch" technology. Sony does note that availability of the 4.0 upgrade will vary by market and, not surprisingly, carrier requirements. Let's just hope you get to enjoy the changes soon.

Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit tells Judge Koh to revisit Galaxy Tab 10.1 injunction

One of the hallmarks of the US judicial system is its seemingly inexhaustible system of appeals -- a system for which Samsung is likely most grateful at the moment. Its earlier entreaty to Judge Lucy Koh to have the Galaxy Tab 10.1 preliminary injunction lifted may have been denied, but the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit is giving the Korean company another bite at the Apple. That court has granted Samsung's request to have the injunction issue remanded so that the trial court can re-consider Samsung's motion to dissolve it. The ruling enables Samsung to argue that the injunction should be lifted because the jury failed to find infringement of the tablet design patent upon which the injunction is based. Will Judge Koh lift the ban? Perhaps, but we're pretty sure that the crowd from Cupertino will be doing plenty to prevent that from happening. Stay tuned.

Opera 11.10 gets HTML5 File API support, IMAP improvements

The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera's built-in email client -- as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail -- such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

How to selectively transfer app and game data to your new iPhone 5

How to manually transfer app data from one iOS device to another

If you picked up a new iPhone 5, did your iCloud, and something's still missing, you might have to move the data over manually. Likewise, if you set your iPhone 5 up as a new device but still want to keep data from a few apps or games, you'll have to move it over manually. iCloud and iTunes are great, but they're not granular.

If you use a Mac, an app like Ecamm's PhoneView is an excellent option. It'll let you browser your old iOS device, copy off just the data you want, and then copy it back to your new iPhone 5. And it's fairly straightforward to do.

Disclaimer: Moving files on your iPhone, or any iOS device for that matter without knowing what you're doing or where you're dropping files can corrupt your file system. Before moving anything, be sure it's what you need to move and that you're putting it in the right location. If you're unsure, we wouldn't recommend proceeding any further.

What you need

Note: Our directions are for Mac users using PhoneView but there are many other apps you can choose from in order to pull data off for both Mac and PC. The layout may be different but the process should be similar.

In order to transfer data from one iPhone to another you'll need a few things:

Your old iPhone (other other iOS device) with the data still in tact
Your new iPhone 5 (or any other new iOS device)
A Mac
PhoneView (Mac only) - $29.95 - Link
A 30-pin sync cable for your old iPhone
A Lightning connector sync cable for your iPhone 5

PhoneView does offer a free trial but what you can pull off your device may be limited. We recommend buying it if you want to make sure you're recovering all your data. Then if you ever need it again, you've already got it.

Once you've made sure you're good to go with all of the above, you can move on.

How to manually transfer iPhone data using PhoneView

If you have a passcode on your old iPhone, enter it and unlock your iPhone so you're at the Home screen before plugging it in.
Plug your old iPhone into your Mac and open the PhoneView app.

You'll see the main window and a guide to using PhoneView. In the left hand column there are many options. In our example, we're going to grab some game data that we need to transfer to our new iPhone 5.

Most game save data is saved in the Documents folder inside the app but the location can vary from app to app. We've put together a list towards the bottom of common places you'll find different data within iOS. It won't hurt to just copy the whole Documents folder if you'd like.

Once you've found your game save data, choose the Copy from iPhone button at the top of PhoneView.
You'll be asked to choose a location on your computer that you'd like to save it to. The quickest way to probably just create a folder on your desktop for the data.

Once you've gotten all the data from your old iPhone that you need, unplug it and plug in your new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Navigate to each place that you need to drop data to. Once you're in that location choose the Copy to iPhone button along the top.
